    Lesson 3:  Common Medical Interview Questions: 

    110 of the Most Commonly Asked Healthcare Interview Questions


    Now that you are familiar with some of the most common types of interviewing styles, you can familiarize yourself with some of the most common interview questions.  In this lesson, you are provided with 110 questions that you may encounter during your job interview.  


    As you review each question, consider the possible follow-up questions that you may also be asked.  Additionally, come up with personal examples and stories from you previous experiences to help you answer the questions more effectively.  Many employers will provide you with a basic question with the expectation that you will automatically build upon it by sharing subjective experiences.


    The questions below are in no specific order:


    1. Tell us a little about yourself. (Have your elevator pitch ready!)

    2. What are your greatest strengths? Weaknesses?

    3. What are you most passionate about?

    4. Why did you decide to pursue a career in the healthcare field? (as a _________)

    5. How would your friends and colleagues describe you?

    6. Why do you believe that you will be a good fit for this position?

    7. How do you deal with conflict?  (You will need to provide an example of how you dealt with a work related issue of conflict in the past and how you resolved the issue.)

    8. Are you current interviewing for other positions?

    9. Who or what event has had a major influence on your life and professional career?

    10. What motivates you?

    11. How do you motivate employees?

    12. Have you researched our competitors?  Who are they?

    13. How do you deal with criticism?

    14. Provide an example of a time when a patient refused/declined to share information with you? How did you handle this situation?  And did you eventually get the information that you needed to provide proper care?

    15. Have you ever had to forgo company policy to achieve a goal?

    16. Describe one habit that you would like to change about yourself.

    17. Describe your approach to decision-making.

    18. Discuss a time when you had to make a difficult decision that others may have disagreed with.

    15. What is the first thing you do when you encounter a new patient/client?

    24. What is your approach to providing employee feedback and conducting personnel evaluations?  Please provide an example of methods that you have found effective in the past.

    25. Describe a time when you exceeded the minimum standards.

    26. How do you manage budget constraints and limited resources?

    4. Share an experience in which you did not know the correct answer to a work related issue.  How did you find the correct answer?

    6. Do you consider yourself influential?  Provide an example of how you influenced others in a positive or negative manner.

    7. Describe a time when you had to step up and lead others?

    8. Describe how you may communicate with someone who does not understand medical jargon.

    9. What approach do you use for educating patients and their families?

    10. Provide an example of how you handled a difficult patient?

    11. What are some common problems that you encounter in your current position daily when dealing with patients?  What preventative measures have you implemented to prevent this?

    12. Describe how you helped to calm down a patient who was nervous?

    13. How do you ensure that patients/clients understand your instructions?

    14. Provide an example of how you of process improvement initiatives that you have developed or participated in?

    15. Describe a scenario in which you worked with outside organizations to effectively coordinate patient care.

    16. Do you know anyone who has visited our facility previously?  What was their perspective on the care that they received?

    17. Do you currently serve on any hospital or community organization committees?

    18. Are you a member of any professional organizations? 

    19. Have you ever felt overwhelmed with your job or managing patients?  How did you handle this?

    20. Provide an example of a time when you had to train other healthcare professionals.

    21. Describe a situation in which you had to be creative to motivate your team and drive change?

    22. Describe a situation in which you had to be creative to resolve a problem.

    23. How often do you lose your temper?

    24. Provide an example of how you adapt in fast-pace work environments.

    2. How do you manage numerous job responsibilities?

    3. How do you obtain and implement feedback from employees and team members to improve your work environment?

    5. What is the name of the last book that you read?  Why did you chose to read this book.

    6. Do you plan to pursue additional educational opportunities in the future?

    7. How do you handle close supervision?

    8. Provide an example of how you have delegated tasks to team members?

    11. How do you prioritize the needs of patients/clients?

    13. What additional skills or qualifications do you possess beyond those outlined in the job description that will make you a good fit for this position?

    14. What is our company’s mission, and how can you help us to achieve it?

    15. Discuss how your values align with our own, as indicated on the company website.

    16. What is your experience training new employees or students? 

    17. How would you handle a situation where you caught a coworker breaking company policies? (stealing, using drugs, abusing patients, etc.)

    18. How would you approach a team member that you feel is not completing their fair share of the workload?

    19. How do you think this current interview is going?

    20. Did you research the local area prior to the interview?  What do you like most about our community? Least?

    3. If  you were a crayon, what color would you be?

    4. What color is the ocean?

    5. How many hospitals are there in the United States?

    6. What would you do if you were stranded at sea with limited food and no communication equipment?

    7. How would you survive being lost in space?

    8. When was the last time you danced?

    9. If there was a movie about your life, what would it be called?
